A comprehensive suite of standalone units, multi-skill combined sets, rescue qualifications, and non-accredited courses are on offer for working in and around confined spaces.
Standalone Nationally Recognised Units

A comprehensive suite of standalone units, multi-skill combined sets, rescue qualifications, and non-accredited courses are on offer for working in and around confined spaces.

Standalone Nationally Recognised Units

  • Enter and work in confined spaces (RIIWHS202E): The core operational qualification for identifying what constitutes a confined space, conducting risk assessments, applying for entry permits, and safely entering and exiting confined spaces.

  • Gas test atmospheres (MSMWHS217): Teaches you how to use electronic test apparatus to test and monitor working atmospheres to ensure safety prior to entry.

  • Operate breathing apparatus (MSMWHS216): Focuses on safely donning, operating, and maintaining self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and airline equipment in irrespirable or oxygen-deficient environments.

  • Work in accordance with an issued permit (MSMPER200): For maintenance staff and contractors to understand permit systems, comply with permit limitations, and work safely under an authorized permit.

  • Issue work permits (MSMPER300): For personnel responsible for issuing, monitoring, and closing work permits or clearances. Note: The pre-requisite for this unit is MSMWHS201.

  • Conduct hazard analysis (MSMWHS201): Focuses on completing hazard analysis, specifying risk controls to bring risks to As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP), and monitoring risk treatments.

Combined Confined Space Course Sets

These packages bundle foundational entry skills with other highly relevant high-risk work competencies:

  • Confined spaces and Operate breathing apparatus (RIIWHS202E & MSMWHS216): For operational personnel required to work in confined spaces where hazardous gases/vapours or oxygen-deficient atmospheres necessitate wearing breathing apparatus.

  • Confined Space and Gas Testing Atmospheres (RIIWHS202E & MSMWHS217): Combines core entry training with the skills needed to perform atmospheric gas testing prior to entry.

  • Confined spaces, Gas testing and Work in accordance with a permit (RIIWHS202E, MSMWHS217 & MSMPER200): Focuses on entry, atmospheric monitoring, and executing work tasks under permit authority.

  • Confined spaces and Work in accordance with a permit (RIIWHS202E & MSMPER200): Tailored for permit holders/recipients required to safely enter a space and operate strictly within permit conditions.

  • Confined spaces, Issue Permits and Hazard Control (RIIWHS202E, MSMWHS201 & MSMPER300): Equips participants to safely enter spaces, analyze hazards, and issue the required permits.

  • Confined spaces, Gas testing, Issue permits and Hazard Control (RIIWHS202E, MSMWHS201, MSMPER300 & MSMWHS217): A comprehensive set covering hazard analysis, atmospheric gas testing, permit issuance, and safe entry.

  • Confined spaces and Working at heights (RIIWHS202E & RIIWHS204E): A dual-qualification program for personnel required to operate safely in both of these high-risk operational environments.

  • Operate breathing apparatus, Confined space, Gas testing atmosphere, Issue work permits and Hazard control (RIIWHS202E, MSMWHS201, MSMPER300, MSMWHS216 & MSMWHS217): The most extensive operational set available, combining entry, gas testing, breathing apparatus operation, hazard analysis, and permit management.

Permit & Hazard sets (Without Confined Space Entry)

  • Gas test and Permit Issuer (MSMWHS201, MSMWHS217 & MSMPER300): For risk managers, safety supervisors, and standby personnel to conduct hazard analysis, issue permits, and perform gas testing.

  • Conduct hazard analysis & Issue work permits (MSMWHS201 & MSMPER300): Focuses on hazard analysis, specifying risk controls, and administering permit systems.

Confined Space Rescue Qualifications

  • Undertake Confined Space Rescue (non-fire sector) (PUASAR025): Focuses on emergency response, risk control, utilizing rescue equipment, and implementing confined space rescue plans to extract casualties safely.

  • Participate in a Rescue Operation and Confined Space Rescue (PUASAR022 & PUASAR025): Combines general rescue team operational skills with specialized confined space extraction and casualty packaging.

Specialised Non-Accredited and Orientation Training

  • Working safely in Confined spaces & restricted access areas (P00689): Designed for experienced personnel acting as standby watchers/rescue persons (non-entry) or those required to enter restricted access areas without needing full national credentials.

  • Sydney Water Confined Space Safety Procedure / Safety Minimums Orientation (P00580): A tailored orientation to safe entry and work requirements on Sydney Water assets under procedure WHSMS0068 V9
